This stereographic panoramic image shows a sculpture of a butterfly in Prehen Woods, a small wooded parkland area close to Derry City, N. Ireland..

Once again the bulldozers and chain saws have entered Prehen Woods this week (February 2012) to destroy another corner of the woods to make way for more houses. A local campaign: No to housing development in Prehen Woods has a Facebook page and an online petition

Photographic and Technical Details
The source images for this panorama were shot in Raw mode on a Canon EOS 5D with a 16mm Zenitar Manual Focus fisheye lens mounted via an EOS adapter.

This butterfly stands in a clearing in the woods. It was shot in Spring 2011. It is shown here as a 360° view, with the sky in the centre, as if we are lying on the ground next to the sculpture looking up at the sky.

It is an ancient woodland dating back to 1600. The entire wood has “Tree Preservation Order” status. It is managed by The Woodland Trust

Despite this it is constantly being threatened with encroachment for housing. It takes persistent campaigning by local people to retain what is left of the woods.

Photographic and Technical Details
The source images for this panorama were shot in Raw mode on a Canon EOS 5D with a 16mm Zenitar Manual Focus fisheye lens mounted via an EOS adapter.

They were taken as a set of 27 separate images in groups of bracketed exposure at 60° intervals. They were stitched and blended together using Hugin an open source panorama tool. Hugin in turn invoked MultiBlend to smooth the seams and Enfuse to create the High Dynamic Range effect.

I stepped in a puddle and fell into another world. This is fantastic George. I can’t quite make out all the text carved below the butterfly, but it seems to be a poem to the butterfly. Very nice composition and expertly done.

  • Richard,
Thank you and thanks for the reminder … I meant to transcribe the inscription … I have a record-shot back in the source images which I can consult. The sculptures were part of an art and environment project involving local schools. The verse on each sculpture was selected from poems written by the children.

one good thing about your panos george they get seen, red bubbles display of standard panos is very disapointing

  • Philip,
Yes I have noticed that issue. I am not sure whether it is a problem with the way RB treats the ratios of the sides or if it is as simple as the absolute number of dots. My stitched panoramas are usually pretty high resolution, coming out of the stitching software at the equivalent of a 72-130MegaPixel image (depending on which camera body I use).

Then if I make them “post card ratio” I will usually upload them as 7,000×5,000 pixels (or even 10,500×7,500) even though RB say that they need much less resolution than that for even their largest prints.

George, congratulations on being featured in the Sold group with this marvellous image. It’s got a fascinating sense of looking up from a tunnel. Disgusting that they can just go and cut down trees in one of our few local woodlands. x

  • Agnes, Thank you.
