The source images for this panorama were shot in Raw mode on a Canon EOD 5D with a 16mm Zenitar fisheye lens.

This stereographic panoramic image shows a sculpture of a squirrel in Prehen Woods. It was shot in Spring 2011. This squirrel sculpture stands on the edge of a path through the woods.

Once again the bulldozers and chain saws have entered Prehen Woods this week (February 2012) to destroy another corner of the woods to make way for more houses. A local campaign: No to housing development in Prehen Woods has a Facebook page and an online petition .

Prehen Woods is a small wooded parkland area close to Derry City, N. Ireland. It is an ancient woodland dating back to 1600. It has taken constant campaigning by local residents to protect the woods from threats of clearance for housing.

The entire wood has “Tree Preservation Order” status. It is managed by The Woodland Trust

Photographic and Technical Detail

The source images for this panorama were shot in Raw mode on a Canon EOD 5D with a 16mm Zenitar Manual Focus fisheye lens mounted via an EOS adapter. They were taken as a set of 27 separate images in groups of bracketed exposure at 60° intervals. They were stitched and blended together using Hugin an open source panorama tool. Hugin in turn invoked MultiBlend to smooth the seams and Enfuse to create the High Dynamic Range effect.

Amazing! You have great skill at both photography and manipulation George. Is the stump part of the sculpture, or is it natural?

  • Richard,
Thank you for the kind words. I think the squirrel was carved from a fallen tree found in the woods. The stump part is just the lower half of the tree-trunk from which it was carved. It is one of a series … I have shot panoramas of three others that I may add here when I get the stitched panoramas right … there is also a fox and a butterfly.
