This rather weathered whelk shell was on the tide line on Fahan Beach on the Inishowen coast of Lough Swilly, County Donegal, Ireland.

In the early evening, after a sunny Spring day we were walking by the edge of the waves just as the low tide turned. This was one of the little things I spotted along the way.

I liked the weathered look – particularly the way it seemed to look a bit like a bullfrog staring up the beach.

I am not very good at identifying seashells. I know “whelk” covers a huge range of shellfish. This one might be a “Buccinum undatum” or a “Cancellaria reticulata”.

I would be happy to hear from someone who knows better. Oh and if you are an expert on shells … are the little ridges and holes on the surface the result of the shell being worn away by the sea or are they the result of other creatures that have attached themselves to this shell?

This photograph is part of my postcard range. You can follow on to another gorgeous Very Ireland Post card

I’m not great at ID’ing shells as well? But think the texture/pattern is the resultfs of marine life other then the original creator… :o) So beautiful and full of movement! When I lived in California…we’d often find shells that had barnacles attached…….
My understanding is that OTHER mullusks and crustaceans will recycle the calcium and other nutrients from abandoned shells………………don’t hold me to this though..again…I don’t know much about them as I now live in the center of the US and no longer get to see ocean life.
