  2. 3 rd March 2015 I made this image available as a tiled image on leggings and a duvet cover. So that the image could tessellate tidily, I cut out the grassy background leaving the flower floating on a transparent background. There is a tiny yellow tormentil flower on the lower right of the full image. So I chose the yellow shade of that flower as the background colour for the leggings and duvet cover.
(I noticed afterwards that you can only see the tormentil flower on the Laptop skin and the Tee-shirt versions and not on the framed print version.)

This Spotted Orchid was growing in the grassland beneath Kilclooney Dolmen near Portnoo in County Donegal, Ireland.

It was on peaty acidic soil.

Botanical name: “Dactylorhiza maculata”
Wild orchids depend on a special relationship between their roots and certain fungus. (The particular fungus varies with the type of orchid.)

It is thought that the mycelium (thread-like growths through the soil) of the fungus provide nutrients to the tiny orchid seeds. Without the fungus in the soil, the orchid seed will not germinate. Some orchids require the presence of the mycelium throughout their lives some need it only at the time of seed germination.

The spotted orchid is one that requires the fungus through-out its life and would die slowly over the next year if a fungicide was to be applied to its surrounding soil.

This photograph is part of my postcard range. You can follow on to another gorgeous Very Ireland Post card just by following that link you can take a mystery tour!ach .
