This wild flower was photographed growing between the limestone blocks used to construct Dun Aengus Stone Fort on Inishmore (or Arainn) – the largest of the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, Ireland.
Its full common name is “Bloody Cranesbill”. This derives, not from the pink flowers, but from the leaves that turn red in Autumn. Its botanical name is “Geranium Sanguineum”. It is quite a rare wild flower in Ireland as a whole because of its preference for alkaline soil, which it finds in plenty on Inishmore.
The Aran Islands have a limestone geology and hence share many of their wild flowers with the nearby Burren region in County Clare on the Irish mainland.
