This wild orchid was photographed on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands, in Galway Bay, Ireland. It is probably a white variant of the “Common Spotted Orchid” – Botanical name: “Dactylorhiza fuchsii” it might be “O’Kelly’s Orchid” a subspecies of the Common Spotted Orchid" – botanical name “Dactylorhiza fuchsii ssp. okellyi”. The Marsh Orchid also has a white variant but they prefer acidic soil. The limestone terrain of the Aran Islands suggests that this is a Common Spotted.

Part of my postcard range. You can follow on to another gorgeous Very Ireland Post card .

    This is beautiful George.
I found this very interesting link on Irish Wildflowers
It would be very interesting to know a bit more about this flower if it’s one of the Orchids in the page I sent. Your photography is better than that on the site I might add.
This would be for us Canadians that are unfamiliar with your beautiful flowers in Ireland (Wildflowers of the World)

    Such a beautiful orchid

  • Kala,
Thank you. What I liked about it was that, while we think of cultivated orchids as rarefied, refined things, when I came across this one it caught my eye, shining out amongst a bunch of grass and ferns and weeds.
