This panorama shows Donegal Bay on a sunny evening in July 2010.
It was taken at a picnic area near Kitty Kelly’s restaurant on the road from Kilcar to Killybegs.
The Source images were shot on a Canon EOS 5d DSLR with a 16 mmm fisheye Zenitar lens.
In the distance, across Donegal Bay in County Sligo, can be seen the Dartry Mountain range and in particular the distinctively shaped Benbulben mountain.
Background to Shooting the Image
After a day of photography on Paddy Byrne’s boat The Nuala Star, I was on my way to dinner at 22 Main Street which is undoubtedly Killybegs’ finest restaurant. It is owned by the same people as Kitty Kelly’s.
The light and especially the clarity across Donegal bay was just so wonderful that, even though I was in danger of being late for dinner I indulged myself by taking the coast road and then could do nothing else but stop at this viewpoint and record the view.
I was compounding my lateness originating from half an hour earlier when I had stopped at Muckross Head to take some photographs.

Background to the Projection of the Image
This panorama is in a projection called “Panini”, named in honour of the 18th Century painter of the same name. The projection was created by Thomas Sharpless and Bruno Postle based on a study of Panini’s paintings which had perspective retaining panoramic views.
This HDR (High Dynamic Range) panorama was cropped from a 360° panorama which was created by combining 27 separate digital photographs covering every angle and with bracketed exposure. Hence there is detail both in the brightest parts of the sky (even near the sun) and in the shadows.
The Source images were shot on a Canon EOS 5d DSLR with a 16 mmm fisheye Zenitar lens, (a manual focus M42 lens mounted via an EOS adapter) and were stitched and blended using Hugin – a free open-source panorama stitching program. Hugin invoked a program called "Enfuse to blend the exposures and create the HDR effect)

    Excellent wide-angle shot, George.
The trailiing clouds, point nicely to the centre. Towards the setting sun, over the Atlantic.

  • Colin, Thank you for the kind words. I will probably load up some alternative projections from the same shoot. George

Beautiful shot – this image has everything – great capture

  • Grandma, Thank you. It was an experiment to use the Panini projection this time producing a more conventional-panoramic effect when compared to the stereographic projections. I was please with the way it came out and the way the HDR process rendered the highlight detail in the sky. George

amazing……..the sky in on fire !

  • Theodore, Thanks for the kind words. I suppose the sky IS on fire in a sense, as we are looking directly at the sun. It’s the High Dynamic Range effect that allows the sun to be included in the image without the whole sky simply becoming over-exposed. George
