A virtual reality version of this image was published as part of the Crossroads Event of the World Wide Panorama project.
This rural crossroads is on one of my favourite roads. It is a few minutes drive from the city of Derry and yet close to the border with County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.
On a summer evening we park the car here and take the looping walk following the roads around Kilea Reservoir. Returning to this junction we enjoy the view of the sun setting over the Donegal hills before driving home.
The roads that cross here are Killea Road and Creevagh Road. If we followed either road downhill we would, within a few hundred metres, cross the border into County Donegal. If we followed either of them uphill we would be heading back towards Derry City centre. In the case of Killea Road we would pass along the top of Killea Reservoir on the way back to Derry – a route much beloved by dog walkers.
Most of the landscape included in the panorama is in County Donegal. The eagle-eyed viewer, who is familiar with Donegal’s mountains, may spot on the horizon, the characteristic shape of the mountain range from Muckish to Erigal in West Donegal.
Approaching from the left is a tractor and trailer transporting grain.
This HDR (High Dynamic Range) panorama was created by combining 48 separate digital photographs covering every angle and with bracketed exposure. The bracketed exposures went from 1/30 of a second to 1/8000 of a second in two stop intervals. Hence there is detail both in the brightest parts of the sky (even near the sun) and in the shadows.
The Source images were shot on a Canon EOS 5d DSLR with a 16 mmm Zenitar fisheye lens, and were stitched and blended using Hugin – a free open-source panorama stitching program.
