These “6-spot Burnet” moths are enjoying some Greater Knapweed on the edge of the road near the airstrip on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands, to the West of Ireland in Galway Bay.

The botanical name of Greater Knapweed is “Centaurea scabiosa“. It prefers alkaline soils. The Aran Islands have a limestone geology similar to the nearby Burren region of County Clare on the Irish mainland. Consequently the two regions provide a suitable habitat for Knapweed and many other wild flowers that they have in common.

The islands are also rich in insect life because of the mostly organic farming methods practiced on the islands.

This is part of my new postcard range. You can follow on to another gorgeous Very Ireland Post card .

Beautiful capture, interesting little moths, congrats on your feature

  • Claudia, Thank you for the kind words. Yes they are interesting little moths – they are sometimes mixed up with the Cinnabar Moth which has similar colours, but the Cinnabar has red streaks on the edges of the wings as well as the red spots. George

Stunning George. I have orange ones of this insect but they look identical. I take it they are the same. Nick

  • Nick, Thanks – I am not sure about an orange one. I know this one is fairly common in some coastal regions and rare elsewhere. It has striking red triangles when it opens its wings. You get a glimpse of those on the one on the right. George
