A taste of Halloween 2012 in Derry

I bring you a slideshow of photographs taken on the streets of Derry on Halloween night 2012.

This would be best viewed at full screen. Hit that box [   ] icon – bottom right of the video!

Halloween is always a big night in Derry. It started taking off, during the worst of times in the 70s and 80s, simply from ordinary Derry people dressing up and wandering the streets. Gradually the City Council got on board, organised official events and facilitated the craziness.

Now on any Halloween night Derry will have tens of thousands of people on the streets. Many of them dressed up – some in very elaborate costumes – some of the best co-ordinate a theme with a bunch of their friends, some will just have a witch’s hat or fac…

World Wide Panorama - "Heritage" event

Each quarter for the last eight years, the World Wide Panorama project has organised an event, in which photographers from all over the world co-ordinate with each other, to each shoot a panorama on a particular theme on the same weekend. Each event’s collection gives a snapshot of the world that weekend.

I described the process in a journal entry two years ago.

This time the theme was Heritage and my panorama of Croaghbeg Court Tomb has been featured as Megalithic Heritage – if you visit that page do click on through to the “Full Screen” page – link is just below the small version.

This event includes work by 75 photographers from more than 25 different countries
(There will probably be a few late entries approved in the next week or two.)

Feature Friday!

Today six of my panoramic photographs have been featured together in the group “Theme Tuesday Featured Friday”

I have to say a big “Thank You!” to Joanne for this.

I played her “Theme Tuesday Featured Friday” game, by thinking up a theme, in my case “Against the Sky” and selecting a group of her photographs that fitted with the theme.

In return she selected a group of my photographs to feature in her group.

Joanne explains how it works on her profile page and I would heartily recommend participation to anyone who likes to join in with fun people who are easy to work with.

I joined RedBubble about 18 months ago. Today the view count on my portfolio passed through 50,000 views. Of those about 10,000 have happened over the last three months.

So this seems like a good time for a small review of some numbers.

Photographs

I have uploaded a total of ninety photographs in that time. Most of those have been panoramas
But I have also included quite a few flowers that I found on my way to or from shooting panoramas, or sometimes right beneath the tripod.

There have also been a few shells and the very occasional thing that was just a photograph

I am pleased to exhibit in SoJie 12. SoJie 12 takes its name from the first letters of Solo’s Juried Invitational Exhibition. This month is only the 12th one, ever, and 120 other members of the Solo Exhibition group, besides myself, are represented.

This exhibition is based on a workshop, in which I participated, where member painters translated member photographers’ images to traditional art medium.

Winners of the invitational will be announced on August 31st, when a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded in three categories: digital art, photography, and traditional art.

Epson Pano Awards

It has been a hectic few weeks.

At the end of April we had the announcements of the Awards from the SoJIE-10 Earth-day exhibition and the news broke that my Ness Glen panorama (above) had been selected as “Best in Show”.

Today I have heard news from the Epson International Photographic Pano Awards . Three of my panoramas have received “Bronze Awards”. They are no longer in the running for the major prizes but this award is like an “Honourable Mention” for the runners up.

My rectangular panorama of Bunglas Sea Cliffs:

was awarded a Bronze Award in the “Nature” section…

Creating a Stereographic Panorama - the Basic Idea

I have a portfolio of panoramic images here.

Most of them are 360° “Stereographic” panoramas, such as the examples above. These are the sort that take a wide view and wrap the horizon around until it meets itself – resulting in an image that looks like a “little planet”.

Shooting the Source Images
Typically I create these panoramas by combining 24 separate digital photographs, covering every angle and with bracketed exposures. I shoot the source images on a Canon EOS 5d with a 16mm fisheye lens producing a set of 12 Mega-pixel images, in Raw mode. I have the camera mounted in portrait-mode, (that is – image taller than it is wide) attached to the tripod via a specialist pano…
