The picture was taken during Jorvik’s Viking Festival in York.
1000 years ago when York was under Viking rule, great celebrations and festivities took place in February called ‘Jólablót’ to herald the coming of spring and survival of winter hardships.
These celebrations were long forgotten until the 1980’s when York Archaeological Trust, entirely through their own founding, revived Jólablót, creating the biggest Viking Festival in Great Britain.
