Županija (Municipal Assembly building)
In 1786 Sombor was declared a permanent seat of the Bačka-Bodrog District… Since 1786 the seat of the District had been located in the former Franciscian Cloister, later the Parochial Palace, next to the Holy Trinity Church… Since there had not been enough space for growing administration, the authorities decided to build a separate assembly building… Following directions of engineer Antoan Bauer, an architect, a building site was chosen at the town market place of that time called the “Pandur Island”, which was surrounded by swamps overgrown with cane… The construction works began in 1805 and finished in 1808… By the mid of 1880 the renovation and the reconstruction of the Municipal Assembly Building had begun… The old facade was completely renovated and made more decorative in eclectic style, there were also built two side towers and the back side of the building… A park was arranged mostly with seedlings of conifers of yew (Taxis) in front of Županija, and with a large number of seedlings of Platanus and Celtis australis inside the park… When the reconstruction was completed in 1882, the Municipal Assembly Building had 200 different rooms, chambers and halls… And 365 windows, each for every day in year…
