Say The Words

Don’t hold on to them
they might slip away
only to recalled when you least expect them
knocking the wind out of your sails
oxygen from out of your lungs
in another moment, just like this one

Pen to paper
your arm an extension
brain cells bouncing

Easier each time
but not always
don’t rely on the ability to recall
those bittersweet moments
the stinging taste on your tongue
as you roll the words around in your mouth
the ringing in your ears
commit them to memory
they seems close enough at times
frustratingly distant
just beyond your outstretched hands
your reach just never quite enough

Thoughts dash, here and there
skittish as a newborn colt
at times vivid and quite up in your face
the way the light fell,
the air, cold on your bare skin
shadows and highlights
then frustratingly
a haze of grey mist
hovers at the edges of your mind
confounding, confusing
deadly desperate

Easier to hold on to the colour
less so the dark

Feelings and emotions
vacillate between
negative, despondent
uplifted, positive

Say these words
share them with someone
don’t let them bounce around
all alone
inside your head
inner dialogue
a lonely discussion

Say the words
out loud
paper and pen

Share them
let them go
they may come back
but with less force
each time

The damage they do
each time
