Mimesis

Mimesis

“Mimesis”
It’s a word the ancient Greeks used to denote their love of copying nature to perfection, the bronze statues were found in the ocean off the coast of Riace, near Reggio Calabria Italy, they don’t know how they got there and took 8 years to restore them, but they are the best ancient Greek bronzes to ever make it through time. the Female is the viewer beholder, we are looking at her the modern contemporary idea of beauty, as she is looking upon the scene and the ancient idea of beauty, the fish are reminiscing of where the statues lay for thousands of years and are like swimming through time. If you were looking at the actual painting you could see the hairs on her arms, and the oxidation in the bronzes.
the architecture is dated from about the same time 450 bc as the bronze statues.

Love this image and am facinated by the story. I have always been drawn to beauty and find the human form as depicted in your artwork as so inspiring. These figures look majestic and humble. Unfortunately modern society has in my opinion mis represented female beauty as you have so beautifully represented. I think the way media has materialised the aesthetically beautiful female has alienated the empowerment that most of us feel through viewing such beautiful examples of human aesthetic perfection. As a male who is very drawn to beautiful women I also find the male sculptures in this image to be very uplifting to me.

you know i just had to look up the word Mimesis :)) and i found imitation, mimicry ~ what i find fascinating about your Title is the fact that there is a woman on the foreground and male statues in the background ~ perhaps signifying power? your comparison between modern contemporary beauty and ancient ideas of beauty. Personally i find the statues more beautiful, but that’s probably because i’m a girl :))

  • Van Cordle replied

I’m a guy who loves females and I think the statues are more beautiful : )

After reading your fascinating commentary and all the wonderful messages here as well Van, I must say I am absolutely dazzled and inspired by your level of talent. Your paintings are so realistic it is amazing! And I love the mystic symbolism. This is very beautiful!! The woman is very beautiful! And the bronze statues standing on the precipice are exquisite!! I have been studying this for long moments! It was quite a long time until I could think of a thing to say at last as it leaves me quite speechless!!
