MamaMia!

Striking mammatus clouds rolled into my area, riding on the backside of a severe thunderstorm. Shortly after their arrival, a cold front was ushered in
to my area in Ashland, Kentucky on March 04, 2008.

    Thank you so much Dougie!!xx

This is one of hundreds of shots that I have
    taken of various mammatus.
These type of clouds often develop on the
underside of a thunderstorm’s anvil. They are
beautiful and spectacular to behold, and quite
incredible when in front of a setting sun!

Thanks so much Kate for your wonderful comments!!xx

I have shot thousands of cloud pictures, but only a few
hundred of them are mammatus. I have been thinking of
doing a series on some of them here at Red Bubble.

Thanks so much Mike; the mammatus are my favorite
type of clouds, with Lenticular Mammatus being my
favorite of them all!! The mammatus shown here are
just common mammatus, but even they are striking!!xx

Not only are the clouds beautiful that you captured, but the tree branches add character to this photo. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful sight, must have been even more dramatic to see it for real.

  • van049 replied

Thank you so much Mary; it didn’t last that long, so I was glad I had my batteries charged up when they moved in that evening!!xx

As tornado alley has already begun to shift more east, mammatus has become more noticeable in my area.
