I took this photo of Mammatus on a Good Friday before Easter in Ashland, Kentucky. The clouds first started rolling in and looked like fluffy white marshmallows. Then in front of the setting sun they dramatically began to change colors. They went from snow white to shades of silvers, pinks, grays, blues and even purples! The colors were quite striking and dramatic; these clouds were nothing like anything I had ever seen before! For a few minutes they turned very dark, and it was a sight I will never forget!! These amazing mammatus clouds lasted about 45 minutes before they exited my area.


We were under our second tornado watch of the year, and I found out later that I was standing right under the anvil of a severe thunderhead and that a tornado could have formed at any moment! Luckily for me it didn’t, and I was able to capture some phenomenal, amazing clouds. I can’t quite put it into words other than to say, “I closed my eyes for a few seconds and felt like I had been kissed on my cheek by an angel.” This was one time in my life that I will always remember!!!

    anyway
    this is a great shot
    i recall many times seeing this same formation but when ever i would try to explain it to people who were not from the area they never understood what i meant exactly

    Thank you CiasArt!! I am from Ashland, Kentucky and not Kansas, though we do have an area just outside the city called Meade.
    This was the first time in my life I ever saw mammatus change into these brilliant colors in front of a setting sun, and while under a tornado watch!! Now there are some Lenticular Mammatus that look similar to these, but even they are a lot more complex than these mammatus are. Thanks again for your wonderful comments!!xx

    Faces? Wow, I never knew there were faces in these clouds! I do have some cloud pictures that you would not believe!     I was so “caught up” into these amazing mammatus clouds as they moved into my area; I felt for a few moments I was in a trance:) These clouds moved through my area on Good Friday before Easter. The Storms Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma had issued the second tornado watch of the season that day for my county of Boyd in northeastern Ky. Again, I am glad you have enjoyed this photo of Mammatus!!xx

    Thank you Saliere!! These mammatus put on quite a show for about 45 minutes. They changed colors from a brilliant white to shades of silver, grays, blues, and even pinks as they danced their way in front of the setting sun that evening!!xx

    These were very special clouds; I always try to document the date, time, and place of every picture I shoot for confirmation.
