A brick, a goddamn brick! Not even a real brick but a symbolic one. Bruno fumed as he read the note attached to his Christmas present:
The money for your gift has been generously donated to help build a school for impoverished children. It is with great pleasure that we will be placing a brick signed with your name into our building. We thank you for your kind contribution. The Educating The World Foundation.
Bruno didn’t mind being charitable, but as a butler, his wage wasn’t that generous to begin with. This was just another way for his employers to feel better about themselves while being inconsiderate to their staff. The Wesleys were renowned for their philanthropic crusades but few knew of their poor treatment of staff and low wages.
As Bruno sat in his car, trying to digest his McDonalds drive thru meal, he hatched a plan. Though it would cost him his job, Bruno was fed up with working for such hypocrites.
Valentine’s Day was always a big event in the Wesley household. As usual, Bruno was tasked with organising the event from the decorating to the catering. He watched as tacky cupids, hearts and plastic roses arrived at the mansion. In the middle of the banqueting table was the most beautiful silver tureen.
As he sat in the plane Bruno could picture Mrs Wesley’s face as she lifted the lid and saw a brick. He chortled as he thought of her reading the decorative note:
The money for your celebration has been generously donated to help Bruno build a new life for himself. It was with great pleasure that he deposited a cheque signed with your name into a Swiss bank account. Bruno thanks you for your kind contribution. The Butlers Foundation.
