His pulse is slowing year by year
He feels it settle in his skin
He takes another sip of beer
To stay the fight he cannot win

The bar man walks from side to side
And pours another “on the bar”
The patron takes it to his pride
But does not fight and thinks afar

To better days before the wars
Of mice and men, which changed them all
But now the angels seek applause
And age denotes the curtain fall

His pulse was slowing by the day
I’m proud of him, but didn’t say…
