A Travelling Expression
Many people write to me from all over the World. I have recently become aware of how many people are suffering from depression. It seems to be on a huge World Wide Scale. It concerns me greatly that many people are feeling like this for various reasons. I thought that it might be a good idea if we joined forces, here on RB and looked at this problem together. Dr.Julie Marks – as we all know is only too happy to extend a helping healing hand for those you might need some help or advice. We must work together, through what means we have to make a difference. You don’t need invitations to visit and help others, let’s work together on this theme. I thought I would change the theme weekly, but I don’t think it’s enough time to get the real extent of the problems people are facing and try to find some solutions. If you have any ideas, then please suggest them.
If you don’t want other’s to know who you are then please write to me about your depression and I will put it up anonymously……
Waiting to hear from you all…..Sx

Thank you Sx… though I can only claim a very ‘small part’ of your dedication of this work… I think you get to the heart of the issue when you write that ‘people are feeling like this for various reasons’. Unfortunately, the bio-medical establishment has been far too effective at claiming expertise over this ‘problem’ of ‘depression’, and in so doing they reduce so many feelings and reasons for feeling the way people do down to one all-encompassing ‘disease’. I feel one of the factors in ‘depression’ to be a lack of a sense of connection with the flow of humanity and the world – of all ‘worlds’... Why this sense of a ‘lack of connection’ may come into being is a question that may have an infinite number of answers.
It seems particularly meaningful to me that this work you have created here has such a wonderful movement, colour and tone of ‘flow’, and I gain a great sense of a grounding of that flow in the solid and earthy-seeming base colours and textures of this image. It is also simply extremely beautiful and calming to look at. Thank you again Sx

Kx Thank you for starting this difficult topic. I am always quite concerned when people use expressions such as….Pull yourself together…..etc I would also like to add that many children are also suffering from depression. I was at a meeting recently and was horrified to discover the numbers. This is an epidemic which very few people are addressing. They silently suffer in the hope that one day they will wake up and everything will be ok. I hope more people will join this very important discussion. Thinking of you!Sx

Wonderful work Sophie…I think it has to do with the world condition. Your paintings are so healing. It all brings us closer to Spirit…whatever that might mean to each one of us..:-) Love, Cherub

We don’t seem to be having much response to this very important issue. I guess some people would rather not talk about it. Which is a great same indeed. Thank you for writing something Val, much appreciated. Wishing you a wonderful week!Sx

DEPRESSION, WHAT DO I LOOK FOR? I FEEL DREADFUL!
My Story by Colindove
DEPRESSION, WHAT DO I LOOK FOR? I FEEL DREADFUL!
DEAR FOLK,
I would like to place before you some of the symptoms of true depression, its differences….especially…the difference from just feeling sad.
It is most important to realise the difference between the two, as ignoring the symptoms prolongs the recovery.
Firstly, sadness, can really affect us…it affects in the way we deal with our general life,... Though we do continue FUNCTIONING WELL with the pain and sadness. Having endured, or are still enduring a difficult relational change, or several changes, or losses within our life,WE FIND WE STILL ARE COPING WITH LIFE, AS DIFFICULT AS IT HAS BECOME. Often with others assistance and encouragement.
In sadness, we still cope with our daily tasks, we accept our responsibilities, we sleep reasonably, we go out as usual, though we may have less interest in socializing,.....though we do still remain confident, though sad. And being sad for a long period, can lead to depression, if the reason for our sadness is unchangeable……though a few sessions with a close friend, Dr, or trusted councellor releaves the sadness, and joy returns.
True Depression , “has many faces”. As we are each different, we also differ in our ‘chemical’ makeup……some of us are more prone to depression than others.
( ON THE FORUM I am reluctant to make this a deep Clinical Analysis) We are here to relate, and exchange thoughts and experience on many Topics.
And another reason, is that Depression is very complex in its many aspects, though it may be simply diagnosed if we view some of those more prominent symptoms, and this is the topic I wish to address.SYMTOMS.
Depression, is very common-, though its first feature is that is is dehabilitating. One loses the ability to cope. By that I mean that even the easiest tasks may be almost impossible to think about, let alone to do.
We may stop going out to , once enjoyed socials. We may become ‘home bodies’ confined to the home, and often to bed.
Working becomes a difficult, if not impossible task, as our confidence is lost, often replaced by fear, unexplained anxiety……................And So….
We tend to withdraw from friends, from Family, as we cannot explain why we feel so wretched.YET WE HATE THE LONELINESS !, AND/OR we want to be alone, and pull the bed covers over our head…. Lock the doors, and pretend we do not exist….as our feelings tell us we do not really live, and we can feel ashamed,.......and even a slight rejection, or criticism is magnified into tradgety.
We may begin to rely on alcohol…and or sedatives, take drugs, do or take anything to relieve the pain, and we may not be able to explain what is the mental pain and despair, a complex loss or lack of hope.
And we stop doing things we enjoy, as we no longer see their purpose, and the world around may feel distant, “like looking through a foggy glass, with you on one side, and others ……out there.
The inability to concentrate , even to read may become difficult,... the words do not leave the paper , nor enter our mind, they just will not stick!
Our thoughts turn inward, “I’m a total failure!.....I can’t think my way out of this situation!.....I feel like a computer with a racing mind…..dashing from file to file in an endless search for an answer,.....and I soon lose the question!.
Nothing good will ever happen again…and I will always be like this..whatever ‘this’ is!
I feel worthless, no value to anyone…And this is not living…..and if it remains like this..it is not worth living
And ‘WHAT IFS’ keep running through this confused mind.
MY FEELINGS ARE OVERWHELMING !
Guilty…or irritable….or really slowed down. Even to raise oneself to shower is almost too hard…and what is the point? You may think!
Decisions, ...even small ones.. Like what to eat, or whilst shopping, what to buy… It can all be too hard.
Frustrated, overly…….disappointed……and miserable…..irritable, changing moods can overpower us.
Physically
Really tired, or exhausted…all the time.
Sleeping to excess, or cannot sleep……..or your day is turned around, so you sleep all day, and awake at night, especially if you are prone to nightmares.
Poor appetite….or pigging out at times to try to change the depressive symptoms
Anxiety, chronic anxiety…….or panic attacks can add to depression,............and multiply feelings of the illness, and crying, so much so that you may think you will turn yourself inside out. Yet as you read, there is excellent help available. And for carers, some of these sights may be apparent. They may even come for a while, and go again, only to return.
It is very important to make sure that you do not think you will need to have Each of these symtoms, as they are the symptoms associated with Depression , and various types of Depression, you may endure a few of them, so this is an overview of various common symtoms.
And may I add, that you are not, I repeate not, as terrible as it feels, ..going mad!. It is wise to seek help from a Dr. to assist you with a benificial prognosis. Print this out,if it is helpful, take a ticked version along as to the few symptoms you do have….don’t ignore it ,. please seek assistance, even if you need a friend or a Family member to help you with the appointment.
Be assured, mostly this is a temporary illness,...and not to feel ashamed of yourself.
My last comment, if you are not coping with normal life, you are not able to function please be assessed by your G.P. as soon as possible. You need not be ashamed, even if you so feel. I have had it, some of my family also, and we are each doing ok now with assistance, right from the start. Now, be compassionate to yourself, as you are to others.

Colin, thank you so much for adding this very important information. There are many people suffering with depression but for some reason people are reluctant to share their feelings. Maybe they need time….this might help. Sending you our very best wishes….Sx

I have written much more on Depression and Panic Disorder working with Dad’s and Mum’s as well as teenagers for six years at www.dadsindistress.asn.au
Having depression over 12 years now, the bouts come less frequently.
Thank you for inviting me to humbly place here this short version of depression.
I can be contacted to share via email colinsprattis@internode.on.net anytime others wish to ‘speak’. Depression is a dreadful illness , still with much stigma attached. I care so please share, your words are safe with me, as mine are with you. More so, please feel free to copy and send to whomever needs reassurance and real empathy.
My very best regards
Colin
