Self Portrait # 2

UnEasy

Self Portrait # 2

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don’t ask why
It’s not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth, it was worth all the while

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks midzing (Wendy?) Appreciate it :)

  • gail anderson

    gail anderson

great sp matched well to the song lyrics. Powerful image, Kevin.

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks gail :) Yes, listening to those lyrics, I remembered this photo which was up awhile ago, but which I unpublished during my recent “housecleaning”. Thanks so much for the comment :)

  • Farras Abdelnour

    Farras Abdelnour

you look sharp in the tux, kevin. it’s an intense capture.

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks Farras – the tux does help, and I am never loathe to accept a black tie invite, lol.

  • Laurie Search

    Laurie Search

Fantastic and moving…the look on your face…

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks so much Laurie – for me, emotion captured is the Grail.

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

Awesome portrait! So many levels of meaning from the mode’s position, body language is so revealing! Excellent in b & w emphasizes the melancholy mood of this image! Great lyrics choice! I just caught on, is this you?

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks Joanne :) Yup, that’s me :D I was hoping for a sense of melancholy – the kind which necessarily attaches to the narrative we write as we look back on our life – on the “Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial” – for life is a trial, and we wonder as we draw closer to the end than the beginning, whether we have acquitted ourselves. Thank you Joanne :)

  • Bradley Nichol

    Bradley Nichol

    • I never pictured you as refined and in a tux. An oxymoron of sorts. However, I thought of you always hold up in a vast and dark library surrounded by books and the pipe smoke of the last100 years. Well read and in deep thought. This is a treat to see, well done !
  • UnEasy replied

Well, mostly I’m flattered you had a picture of me conjured up – as I have of you and many of the folks in my bubble. I’m as comfortable in a tux as I am in jeans, in a Brooks Brothers suit as shorts with combat boots. In a sense you’re right – my last apt in NYC had become almost a library, and I rarely ventured outside. Thanks so much for the comment Bradley :)

  • gail anderson

    gail anderson

you know, I forgot to say… the cigar is a inspired prop…. it adds an entire level to the SP. :~)

  • UnEasy replied

LOL gail – I never smoked one in my life, though I’m a smoker – I bought it as a prop for this shot at the corner Bodega, :) I was going to go with a Brandy snifter in my other hand, but left them all behind (as well as the bottle of Brandy I never opened), lol. That or a Sherry glass [beer drinker here]

  • Susan Bergstrom

    Susan Bergstrom

...this photograph is Iconic my friend…I am awe struck!

  • UnEasy replied

From someone who has mastered the art of creating the iconic image, in a variety of mediums, that’s a great compliment – thanks my friend :)

  • Bradley Nichol

    Bradley Nichol

Well ya know Kevin, we’re probably a lot alike – I am a reclusive billionaire with no friends but am reasonably well read – terrified of germs although I do get out once in a while under an assumed name :-) and shoot beauty…...beer drinker and smoker who thinks deeply about almost everything and the money helps…..

  • UnEasy replied

“reclusive billionaire” hmmm, we have got to hook up :D

  • Mary Ann Reilly

    Mary Ann Reilly

well the unlit cigar and the lighter in hand holds my interest (Don;t think Freud):) Classic shot.

  • UnEasy replied

LOLO – the ever so observant Mary Ann – the unlit cigar :D the lighter is the camera remote – I was too lazy to set the delay for long enough to get rid of it before the shot. :D

  • Dragan Petrovic

    Dragan Petrovic

bradley had it right: a treat to see, and perhaps even more to read… actually impssible to separate the two.

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks Dragan. Yes, it’s a real treat to bumble upon, quite by accident, an amazing fit between a song and an image. Plus it has the added utility of obviating the need to write my own soundbite :D Thanks for the comment :)

  • Mojca Savicki

    Mojca Savicki

as i’ve once already said….this is one stunning, awesome self-portrait KD….i know you have more, at least one more that i loved i think even more than this one :)......i’ve missed you uploaded this shot as i wasn’t used to see uneasy here on RB

  • UnEasy replied

    Thanks M :) I think I know the one you mean. I’ll e-mail it to you :)

  • Shanina Conway

    Shanina Conway

Wonderful portrait, ...did you crop it Kevin?
...I had a quick look before I left last night and I’m sure it wasn’t cropped so closely…because I remember thinking you should be barefoot with one foot in a sandbox…agh, perhaps I imagined it;)
...brilliant shot, elegant styling and I love the lyrics too;)

  • UnEasy replied

Hi Shanina :) So good to see you. No, no crop. And I was wearing shoes and socks, lol. It was a bear getting the tripod just right in my tiny little apt. – ah, how I miss my old place in the city. But I digress, and moon sentimental :D Thanks so much for the nice comment – a special treat coming from you dear friend.

  • Shanina Conway

    Shanina Conway

Isn’t that strange, I was so sure you had one foot on the ground and the other crossed…really thought it would relfect that 70’s wild child if you pulled your socks off and put a foot in a sandbox…lol!
I’d better have another tea to wake up…it’s only English breakfast too lol!

  • UnEasy replied

LOL – hmmm, maybe I missed the boat there, lol. Always tomorrow luv. English breakfast. They call it a fry up or something similar. Eggs, tomatoe, potatoes, toast, black pudding, bacon, sausage, ummm – runs to the Bodega before it closes

  • Shanina Conway

    Shanina Conway

hehehe…let’s start again…..good morning Kevin, wonderful capture…...what a difference a time difference makes;)

  • UnEasy replied

Every moment has the potential to turn in infinite different directions, a few twists, a shift in perspective, a shuffle of the cards, and you are looking in a whole new way….....
Every thought is the same…. a doorway to so many varied pathways.
This is an amazing self portrait, where that thought you are deeply focused on, is known only to you, but possibly felt and shared by those who gaze at this image…..and recognize themselves in you. You have indeed captured a moment poised on the brink of so many possibilities.

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks so much for your – as always – intensely insightful comments Wendy – which require time with the image, and effort as well. I genuinely appreciate you’re taking the time to do that.

The deep, thoughtful vibe of this brilliant self-portrait sits perfectly with the lyrics! Time of your Life is one of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion. Really enjoy looking at your work – in particular your ‘people watching’ reportage, but leaving us to wonder where their coversations or journey were going

  • UnEasy replied

Your insights are so wonderful, morpheus. And yes, I’m off to watch Time of your Life on youtube again. For me, I love all venues, but I think people interest me more than anything.

Thanks so much CarmenHolly. But, there are no hard calls thank God. Only a death involves a hard call, and thank God it’s been awhile since one of those. Thanks so much for commenting.

  • izzybeth

    izzybeth

So before I read all the above comments, I will say it looks as though you have attended a wedding in this portrait. Dressed to the nines. and it is probably late in the day. I hope it is not your wedding, because you appear introspect, perhaps worried. I find this pairing of the photo and lyric a bit poignant, however I may have the notion all wrong…

Handsome portrait. Strong black and white. I bet the cigar was delish!!!

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks so very much lzzybeth :) No, my wedding was decades ago :) Here, I put on my tux in a spur if the moment, just for this shot. Thanks again for your thoughtful and insightful comment :)))

  • mimi yoon

    mimi yoon

this is a very elegant, prestigious, deeply thought provoking, and handsome self portrait… : ) penny for your thoughts…

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks so much mimi :) I’d had a spur of the moment to take a self-portrait, and was listening to Time of Your Life, by Green Day. It seemed sweetly melancholic, and I had an intuitive notion that a shot taken in my tuxedo would be apropos. Thanks so much for your wonderful, thoughtful comments :)))

  • syd baker

    syd baker

This is so thought provoking, especially as a self portrait, in a dual way, not just imagining your character after a wedding and reflecting on other weddings, on losing one’s grown-up offspring to the wild world of adulthood, regrets, mistakes, longings… who can tell, all the while I, at 59, have reached a new plateau of reflection and self recrimination, suddenly career-less, set free from the corporate grind like discarded rubbish. Free, fearful, happy, worried, confident, doubtful, it’s so very unusual to be so taken by such an image of recollection, especially adding that incredibly potent lyric, “I hope you had the time of your life”. I think I’d like that on my gravestone. Either that or, “Get off the grass”.

  • UnEasy replied

Thank you so very much syd – your exceptionally deep and thought provoking comments, richly developed and insightful, are, as here, always a joy to read, and incredibly helpful to me. It’s so rare to see one who goes to such lengths in a comment, and I feel enriched by your efforts. You are a credit to Redbubblers, and a credit to the artist community. My most humble thanks :)))

Quite an extraordinary photo – one that projects an awful lot of emotion. This would be fabulous in a writing class, so many avenues present themselves. :-)

  • Tracy Edgar

    Tracy Edgar

this is intense. almost a little Harrison Ford-ish, at least that’s what I immediately thought of. more effective, I think, in black & white :)

  • UnEasy replied

Thanks so much Tracy :) I have a love/hate relationship with B/W :D The old school in me appreciates its purity, elegance – but the noveau in me, the pop artist loves the vibrancy of color as well. But here I think the B/W is better than color or Sepia. Thanks so very much for commenting :)))

  • Tracy Edgar

    Tracy Edgar

and thank u for your visit too :). yes i agree, the b&w works best here, but nice to have a mix of both

  • UnEasy replied

What a pleasure to visit your portfolio. I just ove your use of subdued color – so subtle, and how it works so well with composition and texture in your work. I do plan on spending some time with your images to hopefully pick up some guidance.
