crown of berries

lichen has grown in places
where the eye does not see,
and as paths deep, will rise
the view expands, and is made good.

holding hands we took turns
to face the wind,
for how it blew our hair
into our faces,

and the rain hung
in fat bellied clouds,
as the ships horns
roared, and cleared the way.

a warm day,
taking our sandwich bags
laid out on benches,
carved with names and dates,
we shelter from the attendant gulls.

later in the inland places
we will hope to find
the trees wearing a crown of berries,
wet and mirrored,
we will take our turns
this way and that,

until all we ever need
is in our hearts.

crown of berries
