i spent a long day gathering

moving slowly through the ferns,
the long gone bluebell stems
just a memory of wild garlic
dead summer lies in the wood.

in the crowns skeleton remains
of the homes they built,
in the lengthening light,
fresh hope gained from within.

the soil is black, riches grown
from the bodies of the leaves,
who gave themselves up
who released themselves to the season.

and silence reigns, things do move
in the periphery,
but silence stays.

moving across the flattened seat
where the grass grew
there is a space that i fit in,
and i wait here after
a long day gathering.

i spent a long day gathering
