tidal sweep

we waved to the people at the jetty
who saw us maybe as tourists
without a story,

and hands clung to to rails
as the day bore the tidal swell

there was enough daylight left
to say goodbye.

among the photographs
the eyes searching detail

of colour, how the world incoming
moves into the future tense

there was enough air left
to say goodbye.

our voices were taken
for that moment
when amidst the rising wind
we saw you fly

as perfect as a butterfly

we saw the daylight die.
so as we turned towards the shore
amongst the things we shared , we saw

there was always daylight left
to say goodbye.

tidal sweep
