paper heart

My heart began to dry out
And became parchment
In which I wrapped you
Until you slept.

I had never cried
Not the way i cried then.
With your little head
Crooked beneath my chin.

But not a sound was made
As the tears coursed down my face,
For fear of waking
And for fear of losing or reminding.

Resting my head back
I saw the faint receding stars
And worshipped them
Briefly, untrained as I was.

On my chest I heard you sigh
A tiny murmur, of surprise.
Who had entered your dream
This night;
As I held you?
and as I cried?
