the dawn chorus

simply, i pushed open the door,
and stood,
vacantly for a moment
until i saw,

in the pre dawn, where the night died
and the day began,
i saw it all.

all false words and unjust smiles
were at once left behind,
as were dead letters, and unwanted lines
bad pennies, unpaid fines.

they were old news,
as my stockinged feet
tasted the dew,

way up in the heavens the first flocks flew
i imagined them, then
until i saw
them, then.

not a single sound,
not one word left my lips
immersed as i was
in this.

rapt, in the immense pleasure
of this

as silently you touched me
you lent down to kiss.

and i died
in the pre dawn
as you kissed my lips.

the dawn chorus
