in the border the little windmill
doesn’t move,
untouched by the breeze,
redundant without
the means,
to live.

and the plans you made,
like the old pots
and the empty spaces
sing ‘i am empty, i am gone
for it is over’

i see the parties on the lawn,
and the old dog,
stretched out
saturated by warmth,

and when you arrived
in fresh married dreams,
all hopes and fears
so unknowing then, the
full subsidence
of the

now just a line of shoes,
and laughter unfulfilled,
and in the border the little windmill,
that doesn’t move,

but i wont forget the time
with fretful hands
you carried the swift to me,

‘i am empty, i am empty
for it is over’

our neighbours have separated, and having seemed always so upbeat and happy it really hit me seeing her loading her bits an bobs and her lovely old dog into the car, to drive off into a new life. we never know what goes on in peoples lives, but it feels really sad, to see just how fragile these connections are. plus i really liked them both and it is a shame now to now be down to one.

wow. so well said/written. I read your poem first and then the story in the description. so true, we really do not know what is going on in other people’s lives . . . . change can be so hard and seems more of this seen then the happy outcomes. but hey never know . . . maybe better for both of them. :)

  • many thanks as always evon ski..yes, sometimes we only ever see a veneer..and life does go on…

Change: I don’t know anyone who hates it more than I do! This poem so perfectly encapsulates the many facets of the kinds of changes which at the least are full of wistfulness, and at their worst create heartbreak. A thoughtful, honest write, as always.

  • much appreciated bd, im always glad to know that you enjoy the words..
