American Avocet: Recurvirostra americana… fairly common..18 in. (46 cm). A large slim shorebird with very slender up-tuned bill, more up-turned in the female. This and striking white and black pattern makes this bird unique..In breeding plummage, head and neck pinkish tan or orange buff; Avocets feed with scythelike sweep of head and bill . Sharp wheek or kleet, excitedly repeated; Mudflats, shallow lakes, marshes, and prairie ponds.
