My father had a Homestead on the prairies back in the early forties, when I was a “boy”. These little ground squirrels used be, all over the pasture where our cattle grazed, and the smaller calves often stumbled when their small feet got caught in the holes. As kids we used to pour water down the holes and watch these little fellows scamble for their lives when they surfaced…We sure were naughty then, but boys will be boys… Would not even think of doing that now…There was no radio, no TV, back they…Had to think of something for our special entertainment…..LOL
Native to the short grass prairies, the Richardson’s Ground Squirrels are found mainly in the Northern USA States, such as North Dakota, Texas, and in southern Canada, in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The range of this animal expanded as forests were cleared to create farm land. They are not simply restricted to prairie, sometimes adapting to suburban environments, causing them to be seen as pests from the burrows they dig. It is not unusual to find gophers digging tunnels under the sidewalks and patios of urban homes.
