This photo is an aerial view of the City of Winnipeg (The Capitol of Manitoba, Canada) taken at a height of 1-2kms above the city….All of these images were then put together and embedded into the floor of the plant room at FortWhyteAlive, our Nature Center on the southwestern edge of Winnipeg.

The top faces north, and you can see where the Red River enters Manitoba from the USA from the south. From the west the Assiniboine River joins the Red at the center of the city, which is where our famous area called The Forks is located.

The purple area is the heavily populated area of the city, while the shades of green are the farming sections of land surrounding the City. The Red River Floodway starting near the bottom, follows on the right and goes around the city and joins the river again. This floodway, often calls Duff’s Ditch (Our Premier at the time) was built after the great 1950 flood, which created extensive damage to the city. It has since been a Godsend, since we can now open the flood gates each spring and divert the water around the city. In 1997 we once again survived what was considered The Flood of the Century
