The Nigger in Me

We all know about racism….but we never talk about it. Seriously, ask yourself how this topic makes you feel. We don’t want to touch it because we know it’s still there…it will never go away….

The Nigger in Me belongs to the following groups:

All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical, Everyday Life, Inspired By Life and Something To Say

If I’ve ever been tired of something
Today was the day
I walked in a class of white AU students
And that bigot looked my way

My fury still surges
From the last time we encountered
Words exchanged
Feelings changed

Does any of it matter?

I’m not who you think I am
Not colored, just vivid and alive
I’m not loud or obnoxious
Occasionally late but remember
I’m on ‘colored’ people’s time

What you don’t know is that I’m smart
Maybe smarter than you
I’m passionate and understanding

Is that foreign to you?

The staff should have known better
Than to say we are diverse
That bullshit’s a lie
We are only dispersed

Should have never added Racism
To the syllabus
Should have checked to see if it still exists

Guess what?

It does

And I am still Rosa, still Martin, still Malcolm
I’m still the little black girl that can’t drink from a white fountain
And you are still that cop with the billy club
Still that white woman who spits in my face
Or smacks me down when I try to get up

And yes…I think I still love you
You are human just like me

But I don’t love the white bitch in you
And you hate the nigger in me

RACISM WILL ONLY GO AWAY WHEN THE HUMAN RACE FINALLY REALISES THAT THE COLOUR OF SOMEONES SKIN DOESN’T MAKE THEM IN ANY WAY DIFFERENT!!! I COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW ANY ONE COULD HATE A FELLOW HUMAN SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE SKIN COLOUR!!! I’M A MALTESE MALE WHOSE GREATEST HEROES HAVE INCLUDED MANY PEOPLE….JIMI HENDRIX, MALCOM X, JOHN LEE HOOKER, MARTIN LUTHER KING, MOHAMMED ALI, MAHALIA JACKSON…ETC A POWERFUL POEM!!! RESPECT!! X

Wow!!!! Girl, this is so powerful. People are ignorant and the ignorant fear what they don’t understand. There is no excuses for people to act like this, hating is not the way, I am truely sorry that you had to encounter such unpleasantries. I mean for goodness sake it is freaking 2009 when will people ever get a clue? Just so you know not all white girls feel this way. Be well.

You truly spoke it on this piece….love what you have composed….the truth ….simply put…have to fav it ….i like when you became super real in these following lines
And I am still Rosa, still Martin, still Malcolm
I’m still the little black girl that can’t drink from a white fountain
And you are still that cop with the billy club
Still that white woman who spits in my face
Or smacks me down when I try to get up

    and you finished it nicely
    truly loved it

And yes…I think I still love you
You are human just like me

But I don’t love the white bitch in you
And you hate the nigger in me

  • Brandyss Adams replied

Amen to you. When I hear about the drinking fountains and the back of the bus and all of the other bullshit that goes along with judging and treating someone simply because of the color of their skin, it honestly makes me sick that I am a part of the caucasian race.

  • Brandyss Adams replied

You know I always wondered about that perspective. I mean, for me, I am trodden with the poignant sting of racism…but I can only imagine how the products of the oppressors may feel in today’s society. I will NEVER sympathize with what happened…but I think we all, at once, should moralize it!
