LOOKING FOR A BRIDE

When I was in Catholic high school, I had an elderly nun who told me a story
that when she was a young girl she went to a dance and someone asked her
to dance as she was walking to the dance floor she looked down and he had
hooves…knowing he was the devil…she turned away and when she looked
back he disappeared..Of course today I realize it was a metaphor..but then
I took it very seriously and checked out feet all the time…So this poem is
dedicated to sweet Sister Gabrielle..

She was young and innocent..the kind he chose
Skin so soft..cheeks pinched red as a rose
His black eyes stared at her from across a room
Needing a bride..a prospective groom
As he approached her..the thunder clapped in the skies
Torrential rains fell and the angels cried
The Creator sad and his tears fell
The young innocent was under the man’s spell
She never noticed the handsome man had hooves
He was not someone this young girl should
Dance with .. this girl so young
Just wanting to dance and have some fun
He whispered something in her ear
And there was a puff of smoke..they both disappeared
Into the fires and furies of hell
The devil had her under his evil spell

  • Sally Omar replied

Thank you so much…Sister Gabrielle was my favorite teacher..she
was old and very sweet but told me all these stories of devils and
how to be careful and always have my rosaries with me..and when
you’re 13 and 14 you take it very literally…Sally xxoo

I went through the catholic school system to. Some nuns could be sooo sweet and tender others were just plain cranky. My Fav was sister Mary Rose she ran the tuck school. Most days I would offered to help serve at morning tea and lunch. It was always warm, with lots of friendly chatter. We didn’t have much money, she seemed to know they kids who were poor, she would always give me a bag of lollies at the end of lunch. She was a warm sweet nun. Great story Sally

She was a wise lady Sally – so wonderful that you remember her still and write this story for her! Love it! xxx

  • Sally Omar replied

Angela, Sister Gabrielle was very elderly then…so I am sure she
is in the better Place laughing at my poem and thinking I thought
she knew it was a metaphor..I often think of her…she preached
independence for women..as well as being weary of men (oops,
forgot that one)...Thank you so much… Sally xxoo

Wonderful poem. Very beautiful memory of an old teacher. Great dark vein in the piece.
