NAVAJO

I wish I had been a NAVAJO
Running in the hills as they go
I would have worn turquoise
And flirted with the NAVAJO boys
Setting fires outside late at night
Dancing in their bright light
Hooping and hollering to the stars
Yelling up to the planet Mars
Knowing that the greatest worth
Was the Maker’s beautiful earth
Their Medicine Men healing all the ills
Of these people who were so strong willed
There were totem poles oh so tall
The best totem poles of all
Red represented the blood they shed
And they lovingly shared their bed
With the young squaws they chose for wives
I think they had wonderful lives
Knowing how to protect their land
And working with their hands
Unfortunately, the white man
Could never really understand
NAVAJO
