the last eagle

the last eagle stood
on a burnt-out tree
at the top of a hill
staring down
at the destruction
that lay before him
man had finally succeeded
in destroying the world
alone, his mate perished
in the devastation
his heart heavy with pain
the loneliness and darkness
of the world shattering around him
man’s greed
man’s lies
man’s hatred
man’s prejudice
man’s inhumanity
lead to this apocalypse
the innocent suffered
the flames of forever
the smell of charred skin
and hair was all that was left
there was no choice
he flew straight into the fire
below him
putting a curse upon
the souls of all mankind

the last eagle
