funeral flowers

funeral flowers
the scent lingered
roses and lilies
lying upon a grave
in the cemetery
with the big weeping willow
standing tall
it’s branches reaching out
like arms wanting to hug
the child looked up
wishing they would embrace her
take away the pain she felt
her grandma was laid to rest
what were her last thoughts
did she know she was dying
did she think of those she loved
did she fear death
or was she finally at peace
lying deep with the hollowed ground
did the Angels
in their long white gowns
with golden halos
meet her on her way to heaven
her granddaughter, just a child
stood on the grass
watching as grandma
was laid to rest
a million thoughts in her head
hoping there was a link
between heaven and earth
allowing grandma to come back
and visit for just a moment
to hear her voice
to hold her hand
whenever she thought of grandma
she could smell the cookies
she baked
now for the rest of her life
when she thought of grandma
there was a lingering scent
of funeral flowers
