Grandma Lina

she left her family in italy
to travel to New York
with frank..my grandfather
the gypsy who wore golden earrings
loved to play his mandolin
write and sing songs
write poetry
he was a dreamer, a storyteller
the grandfather that left this world
before i was born

lina was the realist, the hard worker
a woman who knew no bounds
to protect and feed her five children
who later in life spoke in tongues
and was considered a “holy roller”

to me..she was my playmate
my partner in the small stealing cookie crimes
my teacher in the art of rolling dough
and baking delectable italian treats
i can still smell the aroma of her cooking

i thought i would grow up and lina
would always be there
fate did not have it that way
lina died when i was a little girl
but every so often i have a lina day
when i think back and remember
my beautiful grandmother
whose laughter filled my heart with joy

lina, my beautiful grandmother

Beautiful write. Those memories are so precious. I still remember my grandmother (the other one died when I was two) and tell my son the stories she used to tell me. And so they live on. :-) xoxo
