sharks slowly follow behind
the water now murky and dismal
how did life turn so unkind
the fish dance by happily
mermaids brush each other’s hair
life goes on its merry way
while i swim in utter despair
no one ever warned me
that the waters are dangerous
that a slap in the face
is much more likely than a kiss
what happened to tranquility
and ever-abiding peace
love instead of anger
to give yourself release
songs of words now silenced
only whispers are shared
ripped apart
my soul is now bared
no place to go and hide
no pillow for my bed
no love to hold me tight
or kiss me on my head
my fantasies have disappeared
no prancing fairy princess
all i want to do right now
is lie down my head and rest
captured by the infirm
pulled into an abyss
instead of moving forward
i seem to regress
regretting all my losses
thoughts remain clouded
i swim through the vastness
freezing and shrouded
swimming in unchartered waters
sharks slowly follow behind
the water now murky and dismal
how did life turn so unkind

A question we all ponder at one time or another, isn’t it? And life can seem so unkind when hopes and dreams are gone. You evoke all of that sadness here Sally.

Definitely a question we all ask ourselves. If only we didn’t ask it as much as we do. Excellent poem.
