they called him divine
the preacher man
raising his fist to God
that was his plan
raking in those dollars
speaking in tongues
loved by those following him
the old and young
his black heart beat
deep within his chest
he loved the young girls
loved them the best
promised them heaven
and the supreme rewards
as long as they listened to him
they’d see the lord
each week he chose another
as his sacrificial lamb
he’d sweet talk her
with his “howdy ma’m”
while her parents were praying
their daughter undressed
the preacher promised her
she would be blessed
he took off his collar
and on the floor they lay
he forgot one thing
he forgot to pray
there were rumors, of course
but no one believed
a man of the cloth
was able to deceive
he preached of fire and brimstone
while with the innocent he lay
his followers sang hymns
and with conviction prayed
when the last breathe leaves him
and he plummets to hell
all his followers will plummet
downward just as well
for those who cast their eyes
away from the children be
a disgrace to all that is holy
their souls will never be freed

Wow Sally this is absolutely brilliant poem….powerful, and strong and I have to agree with Helen Jim Jones came to mind with me too. A shocking story abuse of power and position has been told in such lucid and confronting way. You are very gifted writer Sally and always get to the core of the matter. xxoo
