They Come and Go
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire. One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. Archaeologists believe the standing stones were erected around 2200 BC and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.
Some things will come and go. some will last an eternity…
This piece was nominated into the Pay it Forward Group by the wonderful Judith Winde.
This is what she had to say about it:
I would like to nominate the photo that made the biggest impact on me, and that is “They Come and Go” by Paul Tupman.. Having been to Stonehenge and experiencing the mysticism of its existence, seeing the enormity of the stones, and marveling at the monumental spirit and drive it took for whoever it was that constructed this wonder, I couldn’t imagine being able to convey the essence of Stonehenge with a photograph, but Paul Tupman proved me wrong. To me, his photo is truly a masterpiece!
You are too kind, Judith… Thank you.

Wow, love the mood of this shot Paul. Those magnificent stones really dwarf those people (don’t tell me their cows standing up or I’m going to quit for the day!)
The dark brooding image helps convey the magic that is this place and I just love your treatment of it – Quality, pure quality!
Deborah Parkin
I love everything about this Paul – the composition is perfect and the love the perspective of the people – they look so small. What i love most of all is the darkness – brooding and threatening – just perfect!!!
Paul Tupman
Thank you so much Stuart and Deb.. I really appreciate those comments! And Stuart, you are just too funny today for your own good – the cows were actually just lurking out of shot, waiting to get their water slide out while the people weren’t looking!
Jamie Schwartz
Wonderful shot…. Haunting….
Halcyon007
I’ve seen them do that! Most common sight when you’re hiding out in the country is two cows standing up having a chat. One shouts “Car!” and they’re both back on all fours, chewing the grass, the car drives past and they’re back on their hind legs again, talking about the price of milk and how the farmers are making the money whilst they do all the hard work.
Have yet to witness the water slides though – Must be in the wrong part of the country
Paul Tupman
Haha! Well I say water slides, but actually, there is just one really well endowed cow stood at the top of the slide providing a milky alternative to the water! The cows love it and the bulls just watch on in awe! A sight to be seen and not read about!
Judith Winde
Having had the great pleasure of visiting Stonehenge as a high school senior from Massachusetts in 1971, I can relate to this scene, but I’ve never seen a more hauntingly beautiful photo of Stonehenge than this one right here. The black & white/borderline sepia tint and overall darkness of this photo further emphasizes the mysterious past of Stonehenge. This is a masterpiece!!

Interesting, I had a dream about Stonehenge last night ( I have never been there physically though). Your version is much more inspiring than what I saw in my dream.. I LOVE your composition, and the black and white is abosolutely wonderful. good work.

Simply amaaaazing work here, Paul. The tones (always!) the mood..and capturing
the people in it are just the right touch to connect the out of reach past with the present.
That’s what it makes me feel. Gorgeous…....!

Makes me think how tiny we are your small people in this eerie vast landscape with huge rocks. Fabulous work of art.

A well done image of a world famous location but from a POV that is not so common.I like how you incorporated the human element and the landscape in a beautiful b/w image. A wonderful addition to the Human & Nature group.
