High Tea
Just like high tea is a good old English Tradition slipping into only a memory for a few, so is an afternoon stroll along Brightons West Pier.
Originally built in 1866, it is one of only two Grade 1 listed piers in the UK. However, it has been closed and deteriorating since 1975, gradually sinking from sight and into the sea.
Cut off from the shore (partly deliberately, for safety reasons) since 1975, the structure suffered a serious partial collapse during a storm in December, 2002, when a walkway connecting the concert hall and pavilion fell into the sea. In January, 2003 a further collapse saw the destruction of the concert hall in the middle of the pier and in March 2003 the pavilion at the end of the pier caught fire. Firefighters were unable to save the building from destruction because the collapsed walkway prevented them from reaching it.
This shot was taken on a good old English “summers” day just as the clouds broke…. for a moment!

This is spectacular, Paul. Your description gives it so much more oomph!! (particularly for a non-Brit like myself). Everything is just perfect – the tones, the rays breaking through the clouds, the glisten on the water and of course the gull. Absolutely love it. You must be very proud of this capture??

Haunting is right. Unearthly, eerie, possibly the culmination of a quest… you know I’m going to “borrow” this, right?

this is awesome – such a beautiful shot – i love the tones and the vignetting that gives it its vintage feel and the capture of the bird is just brilliant. I remember when this collapsed – felt really sad – i love Piers.

Just perfect! Love the rays of light, and the pool of light on the water around the pier. Your processing has enhanced this mightily! What a magnificent sight this old pier must have been in its heyday!

Oooher – this is a cracker. Love what you have done with the light and tones. The rays of light and that bird add to teh desolate feel you have poresented with this – awesome work Paul.

My best friend lives in Cornwall..(though we’ve never met)..
and has me spelling words like coloUr and favoUr, and I MUST
have my tea now too. (And I’m American!)
The hard work you put into this is obvious. Lovely tones and as always,
you’ve mastered the gamma, shadows & contrast. (Better than anyone in
that department I’ve seen here.) The mood is strong and the history lesson
is a treat.
:-)
Top notch work mate!
