In many parts of the world local folk lore (and perhaps more of an old wives tale than actual scientific fact) states that every seventh coastal wave will be larger than any that precedes it. This disproportionately large seventh wave also goes by the popular name of the “Sneaker Wave”

Well, as I crouched low with my gear waiting for the next shot, I certainly didn’t notice the size of this wave as it snuck up on me, engulfing my tripod and nearly the camera had I not acted quickly and saved myself from a hefty repair bill! The next frame in the sequence was a classic… taking one for the Team! If only it had been in focus!

Oh and I’ve only just about gotten all of the sand out of my tripod now… well, nearly!

Lovely shot, glad you got away unscathed…..

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thanks Juliex! I got away unscathed apart from wet feet! The water still managed to find its way through my waterproof trousers and over my boots!

Fabulous shot Paul – once I again, I love the exposure of the (almost lethal!) waves, and clouds are spectacular…great work.

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thanks Dan. I was really pleased with the way this came out and how the water seemed to compliment the clouds.

Ah Paul – this is just stunning… what more can I say?

  • Paul Tupman replied

Wow! Thank you Carmen… you don’t need to say any more than that to make me smile!
    Thanks again! :-)

Great long exposure shot and I love the story. This kind of shot inspires me to get out to a beach and get shooting…..

If I had £7 for everytime the seventh wave had caught me out and given me an welcome slap then I’d probably have about £77. Although only once has one actually knocked my (now retired) tripod over before. Love the TTT’s in this and there is a real feeling of enclosedness as the tightness of the edges pull you in and leave you feeling short of breath.

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thanks so much Stuart… I really appreciate that. I’ve been watching and learning!
Oh and welcome back… so, is that it? Is the Maternity Leave over now then?
