Blue Morning

Crescent Beach, South Surrey, British Columbia. Canada
March 2008

I took my first tentative steps into the world of early morning shoots this March during my stay in Canada. With much tuition from Claire (I was in the dark and not just because of the early starts), lots of warm clothes and a lot of patience, I started to get the hang of things…

A lot of it was trial and error and believe me, it didn’t always go to plan… finding our tripods locked in the car on a freezing cold and wet morning in Tofino when the hostel owner had our car keys was not fun… but we persevered.

Anyway, this was taken on my penultimate morning in Canada, down at Cresecent Beach on a very still morning. It’s a wonderful experience being up before the hustle and bustle of everyone else and watching the day break… more than anything it will be the amazing array of different colours that you experience and never actually expected that I will always remember.

Had it been a Monday, this would have been the best Blue Monday ever… this, however was a Wednesday.

Gosh Paul. You really are a skilled artisan – especially when taken in context to all your other photos. This is wonderful. Dark and foreboding, yet with the hope of a new day – chasing the depression away. Blue making it feel calm, and yet the dark tugging at childhood fears. Expectant. Knowing that the darkness is having to give way to the glorious light of a new day. Well done!

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thank you so much Mark, for such a considered comment. I love what you have seen in this and the emotions it has stirred in you. There is obviously more here than simplicity that meets the eye!

I have to agree with you there Mel… it definately is the best time of day, and I guess you get used to those early morning alarms! Thanks again… :-)

Blue Wednesday would have made for a better title IMHO. Pre sunup – Best time of the day – unseen by many and the feeling of watching light, that as you say, that is so special and normally unseen is the best way to start the day.

Trial and error – How very true, over a year later and I feel myself just starting to chugg along the learning curve – for every image I post there are 10 or so that don’t.

For early (pardon the pun) “attempts” this is exceptionally good Paul. I really love the coolness of the blue – a really nice cool temperature and the vigenette effect around the edges just draws you into a near TTT light on the horizon.

You mention beach in your description, yet you’ve somehow made it look like a lake – i’m expecting to see trees clear out of the mist as the day progresses.

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thanks so much Stuart for a wonderful comment yet again! I guess it could easily be mistaken for a lake, the sea was so still on this moring in this inlet that the waves were only just about lapping up and down on the rocks as the morning progressed.
With all of these TTT references, I think its about time I pulled my finger out and produced a TTT calendar! Hmmmmm… thinks…

Those rocks, I feel are creeping into the water, the horizon is becoming more fuzzy. It’s a still image that makes me think it’s unfolding. So I keep watching. Wonderful stuff.

  • Paul Tupman replied

Thank you so much Graham… I love your interpretation of this – Those rocks, I feel are creeping into the water such a great way of looking at this… what a brillinat mind you have. :-)
