The Long Walk
Long Beach, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Canada
March, 2008
I put down my Point and Shoot… time to play with a real camera!
This is actually my second upload from my new camera… my new toy… my new partner in crime! I’ve been having a lot of fun with it and my new lens’, especially my wide angle! Of course with a new DSLR there is a lot of trial and error and a tonne of mistakes, but with a lot of great guidance I’m getting into the groove…
Taken the same day as Beauty in Everything this was how the day panned out… Back for breakfast from our disatrous mornings shoot, sand blown out of my lens and a couple hours kip in the bag Claire and I braved the weather and headed out once again…
Just outside of Tofino, on Vancouver Island we came across “Long Beach”... as we had driven up alongside the beach all that we could see between the trees was a starck white.. was it snow, was it ice? It wasn’t untill we drove up to the beach that we saw the full force of the Pacific Ocean crashing up along the shore.. nothing from here until Asia! The beach was certainly a spectacle to behold and with breaks in the weather we cracked on with capturing the drama.
Viewed large you might just catch a glimpse of one or two other brave souls out for an afternoon stroll and then you might get a sense of the scale of all this!

This is just how life should be, new gadgets come along but if we are lucky – at sundown there is someone special to share our heart with.
Give her a big hug : )

This is great:)

What a totally immense of an image Paul. You even manage to get the Tuppers trademark tones on the sand here LOL. You’ve got all the classic ingredients for a great beach shot nicely ticked off the list. That is one amazingly interesting texterous rock there in the foreground and the ripples in the wet sand play a merry dance with the light reflecting upon them. Nice clouds floating past add some interest to the sky and the small clumps of land on the horizon to the left also really add to the scale.
Paul Tupman replied
Wow.. thanks Stuart! I stepped out of my confort zone quite a lot on this road trip, for one with a new camera to get the hang of and then also to try out some new subjects such as seascapes, sunrises and sunsets… to read your comment makes me smile!
Ashley Ng
Excellent composition Paul – Good control of the highlights as well! I sense a lot more wide angles coming our way!
Paul Tupman replied
Thanks Ashley.. and yeah, there could well be… :-)

Paul Tupman replied
I know that you dont like these, but seeing as you have been MIA for so long I thought I would blast your activity box anyway! Thanks so much for all the comments.. and get yourself a wide angle – you’ll love it! Oh, and welcome back!
Marion Cullen
Wonderful depth and scale, excellent use of your ultra wide. The driftwood in the foreground balances and anchors the shot beautifully.
Paul Tupman replied
Thanks Lumineux.. I’m loving my ultra wide! Glad that you liked the drift wood, the beach was littererd with the stuff and this piece was particularly interesting.
Naomi Frost
WOW, Paul….this is magnificent. Such a beautiful capture – you’ve definitely caught the vastness – there’s so much depth =-) and you’ve still got the Tuppers tones there. I can’t wait to get my new camera – just a couple of weeks to go…I might need to call on you for some tips…lol
Paul Tupman replied
Thanks Naomi.. Gotta get those TTs in there somewhere! Cant wait to see what you come up with when you get your new camera. As for tips, whatever I was doing with my new camera I would be thinking “now, how would (insert name) on Redbubble do this”
Mel Brackstone
What a gorgeous scene, Paul. I love the colours you’ve gotten here! Golden glowing sand and beautiful sky…..
Paul Tupman replied
Thanks Mel.. I had so many B+Ws from this day for the drama value.. glad I remembered to get the colour too!
Rhana Griffin
Well well well…. it would seem you and your new partner in crime are a perfect match! The way you have shot this image really gives the viewer a sense of the immensity of your landscape. I love the light to dark shading from top right to bottom left, and those golden tones on the sand…. mmmmmmm just gorgeous!!
Paul Tupman replied
Thanks Rhana.. still learning loads (and still making loads of stupid mistakes) but got loads of help with shooting manually from Claire so its all looking rosey.. I just love all the control that you have with a DSLR!
