Spring still has yet to kick its electric greenery into high gear, but I’m happy to leave the gray and tattered days of fall and winter mostly behind. This 8.2-mile round-trip hike from the Herman Creek Trailhead down to the Herman Creek Trail and then back up to a delightfully songbird-filled section of the Pacific Crest Trail felt to me like an awakening from a long hibernation, with a bounty of emerging fairyslipper orchid, dark woods violet (which are yellow, go figure), chocolate lily, blue windflower, and occasional intact trillium peppering the verdant mossy forest floor with dashes of early spring color.

Ignoring for a moment the stringy platoon of 20 or 30 (very nice) Korean hikers I had to let pass beyond the camera’s view, Pacific Crest Falls was even better this second time around. The lower tier is visible in the distance at top center, and I again left the upper tier out of view due to the strong backlighting. I was worried the higher flow would prevent me from scrambling up the bouldery talus slope, but it was actually easier this time (perhaps because I’d rid myself of my bulky camera chest pack that hindered my climbing). Hope to bring you additional views of this seemingly overlooked cascade soon…

Wow! Very beautiful Tula. Love the lush green. And that water flow is perfect!!! I am anxious to get out there. Soon. I am feeling great. Lets plan a meet and hike soon. I would love to walk this trail or anywhere in the gorge. Sometime in May?

  • Thanks, Jen! That’d be great…I’m not on call for any May weekends at all. Let me know when you and Bob want to make it happen, and we’ll see where the weather suggests we go as the date approaches.

So very beautiful Tula! Love that awesome greeness ~ and the organza like softness of the tumbling water. Just stunning!!!!

  • Thanks as always, Sharon! I’m planning on visiting this scene again in a couple months when it’s really green…right now the bracken ferns are just emerging, and they make a huge difference.
