Elowah Falls I by Tula Top

John B. Yeon State Park, Warrendale, Oregon

5DII, 16-35mL f/2.8L II @ 25mm, CPL + 3-stop GND used as ND

-1, 0 ,1 exposures tone-mapped in Photomatix Pro, fine-tuned in CS5

Elowah Falls is a 213-foot plunge that’s extremely challenging to capture the grandeur of due to the extensive spray that explodes off its splashpool. This shot from a good distance downstream still proved challenging due to the variable lighting coming through the forest canopy, necessitating an HDR approach. Even then, it took some tedious burning and dodging in PS to compensate for the limits of the tone mapping.

I’m ambivalent about this image, too, because it was my first experience with losing over two hours’ worth of effort in PS due to my mouse pointer freezing unceremoniously. Ctrl+S is your friend and your friend often!!
