Artist's Description

Butterfly

Artistic depictions of butterflies have been used in many cultures
at least for the 3500 years ago.
In the ancient Meso-American city of Teotihuacan,
a brilliantly coloured butterfly was carved into
temples, buildings and jewellery.
Sometimes the butterfly was depicted
within with the maw of a jaguar.
The reincarnation of dead warriors souls.

The Ancient Greek word for “butterfly” is ψυχή
which primarily means “soul”.

A butterfly was seen in Japan
as the personification of a person’s soul,
whether they be living,
dying,
or already dead.
A Japanese superstition says that
if a butterfly enters your guestroom
and perches behind the bamboo screen,
the person whom you love most is coming to see you.

The Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi once had a dream of being a butterfly,
flying without care about humanity.
However when he woke up and realized it was just a dream,
he thought to himself “Was I before a man who dreamt about being a butterfly,
or am I now a butterfly who dreams about being a man?”

Today, butterflies are widely used in various objects of art ,
mounted in frame,
embedded in resin,
displayed in bottles even laminated in paper
