A bell tower with muffled bells and an ‘Eye’ that is lower than many of the nearby buildings and Kings Park, which is where most of us go for the best views of the city of Perth and the Swan River.

The bells were originally at St Martins in the Fields, London, and are reputed to have sounded the successful repelling of the Spanish Armada – presumably they weren’t muffled then!

Two Capital cities, too: Perth, capital of Western Australia, and London.

Featured in Odd One Out, July 2009.

Voted third in WA – the ultimate icon challenge in the Australian Landmarks and Icons group, July 31 2009.

How true, how true. Having a stroll through the wonderful gardens and lawns of the foreshore, the relative peace on a Sunday is “shattered” by that muffled pealing.

  • I have a special interest in those bells, as my high school in England used to have its annual Carol Service in St Martin in the Fields – and I was in the choir (ha! ha!). Of course, the bells weren’t there then as they were still in storage after being removed for safety during WWII.

What a pity they were never put back up again there after the war. I don’t think our tower does them justice at all.

This is a more unusual view of the foreshore, well taken

  • Thanks again – I think you have been going through my ’back catalogue!

Hi Ian, well framed photo. The Bell Tower is great for photography. And so was the “Wheel of Excellence” before they took it away. It did actually have quite a good view, but nothing like from Kings Park. Everytime I go to Perth, I find yet another angle for the Bell Tower.

  • Thanks Charles. I must admit I wasn’t a fan of the bell tower initially, but it has definitely grown on me. It would have been much better if they had done it ‘properly’, though, as originally proposed with a water feature down the middle of Barrack Street leading to it.
