HerculesAin’t no Herculesthere aint no Herculescoming down from Olympusto carry the pillars of the world.Ain’t no heroes nowall you romantics, out thereare seeing the changing timesof the American way.I’m no cynicle bearerI’m no liberal hereticI remember all those talesfrom Lindbergh to Kennedy. When we could pull from the mouth of dispaira trip to the moon, or across the endless sea.We were never short of heroesin our times of troubleor one mind, to turn towards fear.Yet who now bears the torchbut the blue collar worker, or the pedestrian soldier.Riding up and down the roadto watch for layoffs or bombsin their uncertainty. There ain’t no Herculesonly fanners of the flamesas the flames continue climbingacross the landscape of the west.We were cold in our calculationstoo pure in our beliefsthat our good, was everyones goodand our god, rose with the skyscrapers. That no man cloistered in a cavecould have an impact, beyond a circle of gravestonesyet, here we are, erecting more of the sameand the only pool of remembrance thereis an empty hole collecting the rain. There ain’t no Herculesno Herculescoming down from Olympusto carry the pillars of the world. There ain’t no heroes nowbeyond the soldier and his aimand his hopeful claim of Providenceto live another day.All we have are number cruncherslaying the odds and counting their beadsand the wolves are neither friend nor foefor they are us and we are them. For all of the talk of one united worldwe still revert to our tribes and our superstitionsno more then Bedoines, in their wanderingsunder a star to find a savior.we all want to find a hero in the turmoilThere ain’t no Herculesno Herculescoming down from Olympusto carry the pillars of the world. There’s only you and then there’s meand anyone who still believes in the common good. That we’ll keep our gods to ourselvesand our heroes on a short leash.

Love it …such a tragically true poem yet at the same time a call, not to arms, but , to the arms of the common man to carry their beliefs and hope into the future and not give away there power to those who may lead us astray with their egos. Wonderful message ,beautifully written as always Bill.:)Vxo

Awesome poem. Even the heros of old are on that tight leash. The world is changing indeed.

  • For better or worse we’re along for the ride :) thanks JR
