closeup portrait / makeup photography - help!

Any artistes on here who dabble in closeup portrait photography, particularly of makeup? My g/f is a makeup artist and I’m a ‘photographer’ (i love saying that) and was wondering what is the best kit to create good closeup facial shots that look good. By kit I mean lenses, flasguns, filters if required etc etc?

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of photoshop tutorials that allow adjustments to highlight people’s faces / eyes / makeup? There’s so many on the interweb to choose from so was wondering if anyone has come across any good ‘uns!

That is all :)

I usually do closeups in my portrait work, and often the makeup is the focus. If you wanted to look at a sampling of my portrait/makeup work, you can go here

The thing I always try to remember is not to get too close to the model’s face. Otherwise the lens distorts features such as the nose (which is unflattering). Distance yourself from the model a bit and then use a good zoom to get the closeup =) You don’t really need a special lens or anything, I don’t think. And with any other portrait, lighting is key in glamor/makeup shots. Use soft, broad lights if you have them (you can get everything you need in lighting kits these days).

If you need help with anything in photoshop, I’d be glad to link you some tutorials =) Just let me know. Hope some of this helps!

that is great :) thanks for taking the time to tell me that
would greatly appreciate some links to some decent tutorials as I often find them somewhat inspiring and actually make me get off my ass and erm, get creative!
but take your time, i’m not in a hurry! and thanks again :)

Hey! Yeah, what are you looking for tutorials on? Seamist (actually an RB user, but she has a deviantart site as well) has a great one for highlighting eyes here and I have made one for airbrushing skin, but I don’t know if you’re looking for anything like that since you want to focus on makeup, correct? I can send it to you anyway if you like, if you want to give me your email address =)

Hey, I only just saw this. A relatively inexpensive lens that I find great for portraiture is my canon 50mm f/1.4, it gives really nice DOF and I’ve always found it very handy.

thanks kate – being a nikon owner, i think i can get a 50mm f/1.8 for about £70 which should do the trick right? the f/1.4 is quite a lot more expensive for some reason?
