Face in the Mirror

It’s a tenuous thing,
that desolation can bring,
in a Sisyphean quest
to pass fountain of youth’s test.

As you look in the mirror
to study a face
so familiar.
Only…. to see what was.
Obsessing on the flaws.
So you,
assemble all the implements of beauty.
The accoutrements to make you pretty,
and spread them out on the vanity.
Brushes, pens, and secret things
for your cheeks, lips and eyes.
Slip on the clothes and accessories
BUT,
nothing works, nothing pleases

I step in,
with my opinion,
“I think you are pretty”
you, can hardly agree.
“You should have known me when”,
mumbling,
about how cruel time has been.
I talk about the way your skin glows
You worry with how your age shows
“I fell in love with a youthful spirit”
You say, all it would take is a facelift.
You see worry wrinkles,
age spots, and liver freckles.
I see laugh lines
and humor divine
in a beautiful mind,

I say you are ravishing
You complain of the calendar’s ravaging.
I admire your looks
and profess my enchantment.
But you dismiss my compliment
as the condiments
Of harmony and decorum.
I find you sexy and desirable
You claim it’s the predictable
hormone yearnings,
of testosterone urgings.
No testament
to your beauty.
I…. “insecurity”?
You…“It’s reality”.

But I disagree.
and compare your beauty to a fine wine.
Though the tender, young, and firm
grapes on the vine
may be sweet.
They only become complete
given time
to ripen.
Developing a robust
stimulating bouquet
of tactile sensory suspense.
Deep and mysterious,
sultry and sensuous.
The champagne of desire
a mature air
of confidence, independence,
and intelligence.
Tempered from life’s experience.

What you fail to realize,
true lovers recognize
weight gains and skin sags,
with age
youth fades
but beauty pervades.
Penetrating your being ,
radiating from your soul,
illuminating those you touch.
It has no timeline,
charted and graphed dateline,
no expiration date,
or maximum weight.
You may worry about fading beauty
and I realize it’s not flawless.
But to me, it is,
growing gorgeous.

While my muse (Sorry Nancy) does exhibit some of these neurosis, this is an embellishment and/or fabrication. It is just a comment on societal views and worries in general. A reassurance of sorts

Yes…only society has deemed things flaws…in our natural state there would be no such thing. I love the way you love.

A very sweet from the heart write. There is so much more to a person than just skin or surface. The glow arises from within. So well said.

  • Thank you Dick, the skin is very shallow if that is all you see….

You are a very special man, and your Nancy is very lucky to have you. No doubt you are equally lucky to have her. One of the most beautiful poems I have ever read. It brought tears to my eyes for the true beauty of it. Your spirit shines, and this I feel is a match made in heaven. True love is divine. I am so happy for you both…and don’t think for a minute every woman on this site will not show this poem to her man and say…why can’t you write me something like this! LOL I would have cried my eyes out were I her, too. A gift to treasure forever, these words, and your beautiful heart and soul. XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

  • She sure is Shar…..LOL You are right on both counts….WE are lucky. Thank you my sweet friend for such a generous complement….This poem is FOR all the women here on RB, there are so many beautiful people here…I know!!!! xoxoxo

We seem to constantly think that the way our bodies age is somehow “unattractive”?.. It is with that same age that we learn the nature of true beauty..It is an ethereal commodity that can neither be “primped” or “plucked”.. It is buried deep within our hearts and souls. It is the inner beauty that shines like a star on a cloudy night,a beacon of hope ,a place of peace and togetherness…This is a Wonderful tribute to the “nature” of life and love….D.
  • Exactly ducilla…fantastic comment!!! Thanks for your time and support
