Archaeology – glamorous? Not if you ask some diggers, asked to clean up a surface of cracked, hard, almost sterile grey dirt in a sugar-cane field on a baking hot sunmmer afternoon …
Taken in Jan 1979 on excavations at a small rescue site called Mpambanyoni, on the Natal South Coast. It was the site of an 11th century farming village on a hilltop ringed with shell middens. The distribution of midens suggested that pretty much everyone was eating the mussels and limpets, alongside hunting, raising cattle and growing crops.
